Angels Watching Over Us
Read Hebrews Chapter 1
Heb 1:14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
Today’s subject is very thought provoking. As I read this recently, I gave it more time to run around inside my mind. Fortunately or unfortunately, the ramblings of my brain are what you get today. How do angels minister to us? What role do they play in our lives, both physically and spiritually? When are they active, and when are they commanded by God to be inactive? These are all puzzling questions, and we are not likely to fully know the answers. It makes me want to find a copy of Billy Graham’s book about angels and read it. Nevertheless, here are my thoughts.
I feel certain that angels are not sent to protect us from every bad thing that could happen to us. The bible is very clear: bad things happen to God’s children. For example, you and I were not protected from the childhood circumstances that led us to be vulnerable to same-sex attractions. God could have done that, or sent His angels to do that, but He didn’t. We know that He had good reason for allowing those things to happen in our lives even if we don’t understand. Nevertheless, I firmly believe there are other times when angels do in fact intervene on our behalf.
For example, at age 21, I survived an automobile accident. Not an ordinary one, but one which occurred on a rain-slick highway at 80 miles an hour. As my car slid down the highway out of control, it could have veered to the left or right, and slammed into a massive bunch of trees. It could have slid into the path of an on-coming car. None of those things occurred. It could have begun tumbling down the highway, as many cars do under those circumstances. Instead, the car slid straight down the highway, slowly decreasing in speed until it slid gently off the road into some bushes. I walked away from the car completely unharmed, receiving only scratches which ensued as I walked my way back to the highway. Angels intervening? I cannot be convinced otherwise.
I also believe that angels are continually protecting us in spiritual warfare. The unseen battles that are happening in the spiritual world would likely blow our minds if we were aware of them. Remember Elisha’s situation in 2 Kings?
2Ki 6:17 And Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes so he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
Clearly, God’s forces are surrounding His children at all times and His angels intervene whenever He commands they do so. How many times have each of us been saved from the evil forces around us? We don’t know. But we will someday find out, and that knowledge will astound us! No matter what is happening in our lives, we can be completely sure that we are being ministered to by His angels. That should give us a good measure of comfort even when we don’t understand what is going on. That should give us comfort even if we question His faithfulness; when our perception erroneously tells us that God is not watching out for us. He certainly is looking out for us, as stated in His word over and over.
Prayer: We are in awe, as we think of how You watch over us, and direct our lives in accordance with Your will. Although we don’t understand, and we question, we trust You and Your faithfulness. Thank You for the ministering angels who are at our side at all times. And oops, remind us of their presence next time we are tempted.
