Comprehending The In-comprehendable
Read Psalm Chapter 139
Ps 139:1 O LORD, You have searched me and You know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue You know it completely, O LORD. 5 You hem me in—behind and before; You have laid Your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain. 7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in the depths, You are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” 12 even the darkness will not be dark to You; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to You.
A discussion arose in one of our small group bible studies about how many things we know about God but do not understand. That is a long, long, list. Here is one which I have thought about a lot recently. The Psalmist described it very well. He stated that God knows when he sits and rises, He knows every thought that comes across his mind, and He is familiar with all his ways. There is nothing about the Psalmist which was hidden from God. In verse 6 the Psalmist declared, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.” Amen to that!!
Let’s look at an even bigger picture. Our Creator has that same, abundant, complete knowledge of every human being alive today and every human being who has ever existed. How can God know everything that is going on in the lives of every living human being simultaneously? How in the world can our finite minds understand something so seemingly impossible? We cannot. Here is the best I can come up with:
We know and believe that God and Jesus are One. We also believe they are separate. We believe the Holy Spirit is also God, yet He is separate. That is another impossible concept for us to comprehend. But for the moment, let us simply know that we know it to be true. In that case, we might say that God “duplicated” Himself in Christ and continues to “duplicate” Himself by imparting the Holy Spirit to each of us. Within us resides God Himself, through the Holy Spirit. That blows my mind!
Ps 139:17 How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 Were I to count them they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with You.
As we attempt to rattle these thoughts around in our minds, we can add one other thing which we cannot comprehend. Our Savior, who is far beyond our ability to understand, has loved you and me so much that He has been willing to save us from the destructive aspects and consequences of homosexuality. We don’t understand why He would choose to do so. We don’t understand why we have been given the ability to perceive its dark side while so many hundreds of thousands of men and women are unable to see its dark side.
We can say for sure that our personal understanding is a gift from a merciful, loving God. We should thank Him freely and often for this precious, unmatchable gift – for along with it comes the indescribable gift of eternal life. Wow! We are indeed blessed!!
Prayer: Thank You for the ability to believe so many concepts that we cannot understand. No wonder the world thinks we are crazy! Were it not for You, Lord, we would have no ability to believe in You and Your word. We ask that You provide that same gift to all of our friends and family who remain skeptical.
