Discerning Truth

Discerning Truth

Col 2:2 My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.

Col 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

Anyone who wishes to have “complete understanding,” as noted in verse 2, must find that understanding in Jesus. There is no other final authority through which man can gain understanding. Today’s mankind sure tries to find it elsewhere. Just about everything we hear from today’s secular society is based on something mentioned in verse 3. The wisdom we hear is nothing more than “fine-sounding arguments.” In the minds of those who do not rely upon Godly wisdom, what they decide, or “discover,” sounds good.

The world has it all figured out. “Christians are deceived if they believe that nonsense from the bible. Only the simple-minded could ever believe those impossible Old Testament stories. People who have faith in Christ have no clue. Someone had to die in order for others to escape hell? Are you nuts?”

1Co 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”

On the other hand, we have another group of people, who claim the name of Christ, who also speak with fine-sounding arguments. “Would God really make someone who was born gay live their lives unsatisfied sexually? Would a God of love condemn a man to hell just because they love someone of the same gender? Is that really a part of God’s character and nature? Of course not! He doesn’t want anyone to live their entire lives unfulfilled. God is loving and forgiving. A gay man can’t help who he is.” It all sounds plausible. It makes perfect sense.

No it doesn’t! When a man begins to believe that his way of thinking makes more sense that God’s word, he becomes the epitome of arrogance. What he is saying is either: “I am smarter than God,” or “I have enough wisdom on my own to decide what is true and what is not true in the bible.”

Do any of us know anyone who has that much wisdom? We do not. The only wisdom which can be fully trusted is that which flows from the mind of God/Christ. Any wisdom which contradicts God’s word “depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world.” Are there smart people in the world, who do in fact have great wisdom? Yes, there are. But when they say something that is contrary to God’s word, we can be sure he or she has gone off base. When they do that, they are speaking hollow and deceptive philosophy.

Pr 21:30 There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD.

Jn 7:16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not My own. It comes from Him who sent Me. 17 If anyone chooses to do God’s will, he will find out whether My teaching comes from God or whether I speak on My own. 18 He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. 19

Prayer: There is great wisdom in looking to You for wisdom and knowledge. You are the only reliable source of these attributes. At times we want to believe these fine-sounding arguments. It sure would make our lives easier to handle. But we cannot. Thank You for the truth, which has been so clearly presented to us through Your word. Keep us strong, so that we will not be deceived by any of what we hear from this world.
