Hold On To Him As You Go
Read Matthew Chapter 24
Mt 24:10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.
This passage is a discourse from the mouth of Jesus himself. He was speaking of the end times. Whether the “end times” in this passage refers to events which have already occurred or if they are yet to come is immaterial. False prophets have appeared and deceived many over the past 2,000 years, and that will continue to be the case until our Lord returns. For the purposes of our study today, we will look at how that prophecy is being fulfilled today.
We definitely see an increase in evil. There are so many examples that we won’t attempt to pick out a few and name them. We also see the love of most growing cold. We can cite the increase in divorce as our most glaring example. However, neither of these two thoughts will be the main emphasis for today. The increase of wickedness and the waning of love will continue to become more evident at time goes on, and there is little we can do about it. But there is something we can do about the next thought.
“He who stands firm to the end will be saved.” Does that mean that we have the ability and responsibility to maintain the validity of our faith? Or does it mean that those who possess valid faith will indeed stand firm to the end? I could present a good case for either one. I am more struck that Jesus firmly stated a simple fact – those who stand firm to the end WILL be saved. As we see more and more men and women deserting God’s obvious views on homosexuality, we have to wonder – will those men and women return to the truth at some time in the future, or have they failed to “stand firm to the end?”
We don’t know the answer to that question. But we have the ability to ensure that we personally do not fail to stand. We can stand firm to the end by clinging unwaveringly to God’s word. It is true and will always be true. None of man’s twisting of the truth will ever change what was originally written through inspiration of the Holy Spirit. That includes what God wrote about homosexual behaviors.
We can look at this truth from different standpoints. Some of us will believe that we must make a solid effort to remain firm to the end. Some of us will believe that God will supply us with all the power we need to stand firm to the end. Others of us will believe that because we are children of God, we WILL stand firm to the end because of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, and that our standing firm is proof of our salvation. No matter which viewpoint you have, this truth does not waiver: “He who stands firm to the end will be saved.” Jesus said it, therefore it is.
Prayer: Lord, thank You. Give us the desire, willingness, and ability to stand firm. We are weak vessels; therefore we look to You to help us remain firmly entrenched in truth. We thank You for knowing for certain that we will be saved because we stand firm to the end.
