It’s All Or Nothing
Read Acts Chapter 17
Ac 17:1 When they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. 2 As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 3 explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ,’” he said.
There are some Christians today who do not revere the teachings from the Old Testament. Some disavow the stories of creation, Jonah and the great fish, parting of the Red Sea, and other ideas that are difficult to believe. Additionally, some see God’s laws as harsh and probably are man’s ideas instead of holy inspired scriptures. That presents a big problem. How much of the Old Testament is true, and how much is fable? What parts do we believe and which parts do we discard? One thing I know – there is no man alive who has sufficient wisdom to make those decisions.
I have no doubts whatsoever but that the OT is fully God-inspired and fully true. Let me make my case for that belief. In this passage from Acts, Paul had no problem using OT truths to prove that Jesus is the Son of God. He used OT scripture to explain and prove that Christ’s life and death was accurately foretold. The New Testament is full of references to the Old Testament, which validates it completely. Here is an example from the mouth of Christ Himself.
Mt 13:15 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’
That one is a reference to Isaiah 6:9-10. Jesus referred back to OT passages over and over, many times. He even read from OT scriptures in the synagogue. I cannot imagine that Christ would have done so if the Old Testament were not valid words from God Himself. Additionally, would He not have taken the trouble to correct any errors which were being taught? The only thing He did was to refute the incorrect interpretations of scriptures which had come from the scribes. What about those accounts which seem to be impossible in the eyes of mankind? Look what Jesus said about one of them.
Mt 12:40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now one greater than Jonah is here.
Case closed! The Old Testament is 100% real and true, God-approved and inspired.
In the SSA community, there are many who discount the Old Testament words concerning homosexuality. Some even say that the New Testament is silent on the subject. Obviously they have not carefully read Romans chapter 1. That notwithstanding, we have already seen that the OT is fully true, which means that all of God’s warnings against homosexual behaviors are valid. We need wonder no more. There is no question but that homosexual actions and lusts are an offense to our Lord.
Let’s continue to hold firmly to the truth of God’s word – all of it.
Prayer: Lord, the gulf between true believers and false ones is widening before our eyes. We are living in an age when we must make a choice. We must believe everything You have spoken. To pick and choose what we want to believe and discard what we do not believe would make us the most arrogant of all men. Lord, keep us strongly committed to You and all of Your truth. Do not let us stray, and become victims of false prophesy. God have mercy on all who have fallen away.
