Read Psalm 119:89-104
Ps 119:92 If Your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.
Wow! As I read this verse recently, a powerful truth was suddenly revealed to me. All my life, as I have battled SSA, there have been many times when God and His word were the only forces preventing me from giving up and giving in permanently. Even during the times of my missteps, God’s truth about homosexual behavior always occupied a corner of my mind. It would not budge or bend. If that had not been the case, there would have been no incentive and no reason to sense a need to discontinue such practices. I would have perished in my affliction.
Expressed similarly, if His law had not continued to be a relentless force in my heart, I really would have perished in my affliction. Somewhere along the pathway of a man’s life, our Lord and His word have to become the most influential forces within his heart. If that doesn’t happen, there will be no barriers to cross to prevent him from perishing in his affliction. He will remain addicted to his sinful desires and never allow himself to be guided by the Holy Spirit. The next verse expresses the same idea.
Ps 119:93 I will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have preserved my life.
His truth, His precepts, and His word have the power to preserve a man’s life. The progression might go something like this:
1. God is discovered in His word.
2. A man who discovers the one and only true God will find Christ.
3. When a man finds Christ, he accepts God’s word and instruction.
4. God’s instructions show a man the pathway to living a life with purpose.
5. The truth prevents a man from going down to destruction and ushers him into eternal life with God.
Ps 119:104 I gain understanding from Your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path.
Sooner or later, every Christian will come to hate every wrong path. The Holy Spirit living within a man’s heart will not allow him to be content with living a sinful life. If any of us have ever believed that His word was not important, this should settle the matter. It may be the most important part of each day, studying and meditating on His word. It keeps us on track and prevents us from falling away from truth.
Prayer: Thank You for the written word. Without it, all we would have to rely on is our extremely fallible wisdom.
