Lord. Have Mercy

Lord. Have Mercy

Read Jeremiah Chapter 51

Jer 51:51 “We are disgraced, for we have been insulted and shame covers our faces, because foreigners have entered the holy places of the LORD’S house.”

La 1:10 The enemy laid hands on all her treasures; she saw pagan nations enter her sanctuary—those You had forbidden to enter Your assembly.

We should be extremely alarmed over what is happening in our churches today. I could not help but see a comparison between what we see happening in today’s churches and what happened to the Lord’s temple in the Old Testament. Our congregations are increasingly becoming more representative of the world’s views than it is a representative of God’s personage and truth. At the time I write this, a Facebook post is making the rounds. A pastor, Rob Bell, has recently questioned publicly some of the truths in God’s holy word. Here is a link to one of those posts, hoping it will still be available for you to read when this devotional is read.

Our congregations are fast succumbing to the false teachings about homosexuality. People are becoming leaderless. While it is sad that church leaders are pulling away from the truth, there is even a sadder thought. Those leaders are leading others astray. Like the spread of yeast in a lump of dough, false teachings will scatter throughout the congregations of those pastors and teachers. They are becoming like sheep without a shepherd.

Mt 9:36 When Jesus saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Mt 10:25 It is enough for the student to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebub, how much more the members of his household!

You and I are of a very small minority, a remnant if you will, who stand firm and hold fast to the truth of God’s word. We must redouble our intention and effort to remain unalterably entrenched in the truth, so that we will not fail to remain true to the end. It will not be easy. We are going to face incredible opposition to our beliefs. We will make enemies. As men and women who wrestle with insecurities, painfully wanting to be accepted and loved by all, our resolve will be tested like never before. We will have to learn how to accept rejection, realizing that the world is rejecting Christ, not us. I know you feel as I do – rejection is difficult to deal with.

Mt 10:22 All men will hate you because of Me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Mt 10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Mt 10:14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. 15 I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. 16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

We are charged to remain strong in our faith. We must be diligent in attaining spiritual maturity, blocking out anything which might hamper our faith in God and His holy word. Someone must remain alive with a valid testimony to His grace and mercy, calling the world to repentance, and resisting the fallacy of hyper-grace. That’s you and me.

Prayer: Father, we will not be able to withstand this world’s pressures, unless You fill us with Your Spirit. Strengthen us so that we will become that remnant who holds firmly to You and Your word. We cannot end our prayer without once again asking You to speak to the hearts and minds of our friends who have wandered away from You. Lord, have mercy!
