Lovin’ Some Bread

Lovin’ Some Bread

Read John Chapter 6

Jn 6:26 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, you are looking for Me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On Him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

Jn 6:31 Our forefathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’’” 32 Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 “Sir,” they said, “from now on give us this bread.” 35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never go hungry, and he who believes in Me will never be thirsty.

There are several great truths wrapped up in these verses which deal with the subject of “bread.”

  1. There is a huge difference between earthly bread and true heavenly bread. One of them feeds the body, which is destined to slowly deteriorate and die. The other is spiritual bread, which provides the sustenance necessary to inherit eternal life. We must have both. One prevents our earthly bodies from a slow physical death. The other prevents our spiritual selves from eternal death.
  2. If a man does not realize that his earthly bread is a gift from God, how can he understand that spiritual bread is from God? If he believes that earthly bread is something that he acquired by his own strength, or by the strength of some other mortal being, he will have great difficulty believing there is a Creator who is responsible for all good things we enjoy in life.
  3. The most important type of bread, of course, is our spiritual bread. Mankind exerts a lot of energies attempting to obtain earthly bread, but very little time seeking eternal bread. Jesus affirmed that the most important quest if for the bread which supplies a man with eternal life. If a man finds eternal bread, he will understand that his Lord is the supplier of both kinds of bread.

In our lives, as we do battle with our sinful nature in the form of SSA, we are on a quest for spiritual bread. We realize that it is God who is the giver of eternal life. We understand that our sinful nature is “bread” from the ruler of this earth, not the Ruler of the spiritual realm. Our choice is not between earthly bread and spiritual bread, both of which are from the hand of God. The choice we have made is to seek spiritual bread from our Lord and Savior, as opposed to accepting the bread which our mortal enemy would love to give us.

We have eaten a lot of unspiritual bread from the hand of the ruler of this world. It tastes wonderful. But the hidden ingredients in his bread slowly kill us, spiritually. It’s not worth the cost that man pays for eating at the feet of God’s enemy. Our Lord’s bread will heal and purify us, prepare us for an eternity of life – a life full of more joy and blessings than any of us can ever imagine.

This should give each of us all the comfort we need to persevere to the end. Our Lord never hesitates to supply all the needs of those who seek Him. Few people seek God with the sincerity and perseverance as those who are dealing with some monstrous addiction, one of which is same-sex attractions. We will be rewarded for our search for God and Christ.

Heb 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

And my favorite promise in regard to our search:

Jn 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never drive away.

Prayer: Once again, there is little more that we can say other than, “Thank You!”
