No Treaty, No Compromise
Read Joshua Chapter 23
Jos 23:9 “The LORD has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you. 10 One of you routs a thousand, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as He promised. 11 So be very careful to love the LORD your God. 12 “But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you and if you intermarry with them and associate with them, 13 then you may be sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land, which the LORD your God has given you.
The world of God’s people and the world of unbelievers are distinct and separate worlds. They cannot coexist, as some would suggest. The two worlds have been at war since the fall of Adam and Eve, and they will remain enemies until Christ returns and destroys every man and woman who refused to believe in Him. It’s not that we have any choice but to live near them. We will. But we do not have to become a part of them.
Verses 11 and 12 give us two instructions which we must be careful to follow. First, we must remember to love the Lord our God. As we live alongside those who follow the prince of this world, our minds and eyes must remain fixed upon our God, the One who holds the keys to life and death. He, and only He, has the power to deliver us when this life is over. If we are not firmly affixed to the Lord, our minds can more easily wander over to those other ‘gods’ that this world worships. Staying in touch and in step with our Savior is vitally necessary to our spiritual well-being.
Next, we are warned against turning away and allying ourselves with those who do not worship God. It should grieve us to see churches today teaching that there are many roads to God. There are not. There is only one road, one way, to God. That is through belief in Jesus Christ and following Him. To espouse the idea that Islam, Buddha, Hindu, or any of the other false religions are ways to eternal life is completely contrary to the truth. Our world is dying and has no hope, unless they repent and turn to the Lord. Our God makes it very clear. We are not of this world. We must not allow ourselves to become a part of it. Disaster will happen if we do.
The prophecy in verse 13 is coming true before our very eyes. This world has become a snare and a trap for the people of God. We see the world rapidly invading our churches. We see little evidence of our churches converting the world. Sinfulness is becoming more and more acceptable among Christian circles. What a mess we have become! The latter part of verse 13 is also happening. We are being pushed into the background of society, portrayed as foolish, ignorant people. The media, the entertainment industry, and even our political leaders are gradually diminishing our standing in the eyes of the uninformed. Houston, we have a problem.
In this scenario we have described, homosexual behavior has found its way into our churches. There is only one hope. God always has a remnant of His people, strongly holding on to truth. This remnant must remain strong, solidified, and unyielding in the face of world opposition. It will be a difficult road, this one we have chosen. But it is the only road on which God leads His people. As mentioned earlier, we have no choice but to live in this world, among the hordes of unbelievers. But we do not have to ally ourselves with them. Actually, our mission is to spread the truth of Jesus Christ to any of them who will listen. They must become a part of us, not the opposite.
Prayer: Father, we know this. Make very clear to us what we must do. Give us opportunities to reveal You to others, that they may go with us into eternity. Keep us strong and give us power to deliver Your word through the guidance of the Spirit. Correct us if You see any of us going the way of the world, allying ourselves to their causes.
