Read Acts Chapter 26
Ac 26:20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and to the Gentiles also, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds. 21 That is why the Jews seized me in the temple courts and tried to kill me. 22 But I have had God’s help to this very day, and so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen— 23 that the Christ would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would proclaim light to his own people and to the Gentiles.” 24 At this point Festus interrupted Paul’s defense. “You are out of your mind, Paul!” he shouted. “Your great learning is driving you insane.” 25 “I am not insane, most excellent Festus,” Paul replied. “What I am saying is true and reasonable.
There are many good topics which could be pulled out of this passage. We could look at repentance, deeds, persecution, the good fortune we Gentiles have been given, how faith and works interlock, just to name a few. But our subject will be quite different. The question we want to study today is, “Are you crazy?” I hope you are. It pretty much takes a crazy person to believe correctly about God, Christ, and their word.
1Co 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
By the standards of worldly wisdom and intelligence, anyone who believes in an unseen God is ignorant, crazy or foolish. Not only do we believe in an unseen God, we also believe (actually, we KNOW) that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins. His horrible death on a cross outside Jerusalem allowed us to have our sins forgiven and live forever in a place called Heaven. Ridiculous!! Just how misled can anyone be? Yes, we believe and know that all this is true. We have lost our minds, according to the unsaved world.
Also, we believe that Jesus was raised from the dead and walked around on earth for 40 days with holes in His hands, feet, and side. He appeared and disappeared at will and rose up into the clouds as He departed. Yep, we are crazy. Thank God that we are! That’s not the end of our insanity. We actually hold to the ideas that abortion, pre-marital sex, perversion, pornography, co-habiting without the benefit of marriage, babies born out of wedlock, and yes, even homosexual behaviors, are sinful. They offend the Creator of all things which exist. What? You believe there is a Creator? How stupid can you get!? Want to hear one other? God’s word indicates that a marriage between two unbelievers is unholy.
1Co 7:13 And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him. 14 For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.
Yep, we must be out of our gourds! Our world can never understand the things of God, unless it is revealed to them by the Holy Spirit. Whether one believes that we are chosen, or that we choose to believe in Christ, it is the Spirit who makes these truths come alive within our hearts and minds. Yes, we are the nuttiest group of people living on the earth. We are keeping good company – which includes all of the NT saints and many hundreds of thousands who have lived since that era.
Finally, we focus our attention to homosexual behaviors. We know that such actions are unholy events, offensive to our Lord and Savior. They are forgivable if a man or woman repents and submits their will to God. That idea is beyond the realm of reality in our modern world today. We are all crazy as loons!
Prayer: Father, thank You for showing us the truth in all of these things. We gladly suffer the world’s views of our insanity. But Father, once again we ask that Your Spirit perform a mighty miracle in our present day world. Lord, bring a miraculous work of the Spirit in this evil time.
