Save The Scoffers, Lord
Read Acts Chapter 13
Ac 13:40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you: 41 “ ‘Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.’’”
There is something happening in our current world that should shock and frighten us. Our young people today are not being taught about the dangers of homosexuality. Over the past fourteen years, I have encountered many young men, in their teens and twenties, who are not fully convinced that a gay life is an offense to our Lord. Just recently, I heard, second hand, of a young man who attends a Christian college. He deals with same-sex attractions, and when questioned about whether he plans to give in to it or to resist it, he replied that he hasn’t decided.
When a person is riding the fence in regard to the sinfulness of something God has declared to be sin, that is a pretty good indication that he has not encountered the truth about it. There are exceptions, of course. Some young men have heard the truth in their churches and have decided to ignore it. But I greatly fear that most of them have not heard the truth in their churches.
Most of our young men and women today have not heard how devastating the gay life is. Most do not know that God is fully against those who refuse to repent and come to Christ for forgiveness over their sins of homosexual actions. In fact, many churches are filling them with the idea that our bibles are incorrect on this issue. This is an extremely sad situation. Men and women are not hearing the truth, and when they hear it from a church or Christian, they are already firmly committed to living a gay life. That’s where our scripture passage comes into play. Those who have heard and believed the lies become scoffers.
The number of scoffers in our times is increasing daily. The world has been successful in getting its message into the minds and hearts of our young men and women. We see that indoctrination at every turn in our society. Yes, I know that this particular passage is not addressing homosexuality. But the principle is true for every situation over sin, including homosexuality/
What can we do about the propensity for our churches to ignore this issue or to teach falsehood? I know we must remain strong in the face of a society which will see us as haters, not lovers. We will be pounded on every side, with the hope that we will be shamed into silence. I also know that we must not be a part of a church which proudly pronounces homosexuality as no longer a sin, or that it never has been sinful. Beyond that, if our churches are on the fence over this issue, or refuse to address it for fear of losing membership, perhaps we should take our pastor aside and speak with him about it. We cannot afford to ride the fence. There is too much at stake.
We will always have scoffers. We will never convince everyone that our Lord cannot and will not tolerate willful acts of homosexual behaviors. But we must do whatever we can do. Those who scoff, and fail to repent before they pass from this earth, will perish, just as verse 41 states. That grieves me more than words can describe. It should grieve all of us.
Prayer: Father, only Your Holy Spirit can convince men of the truth. Open the minds and hearts of all the scoffers. At the same time, lead us to anyone who is willing to listen and heed Your warnings. We grieve over those who will perish because of their unbelief.
