Testing Our Wisdom – Where Does It Come From?

Testing Our Wisdom – Where Does It Come From?

Read 1 Corinthians Chapter 2

1Co 3:18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a “fool” so that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”; 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.”

As the gap between the “ex-gay” camp and the “ex-ex-gay” camp increasingly widens, each of us must search more diligently for the truth than ever before. In order to do that, we must first examine where we are obtaining our ‘wisdom.’ Are we receiving it from God’s word? Are we receiving it from the world? Is our wisdom coming from our own ways of human logic? I don’t think I have to remind you from where true wisdom comes.

Only the wisdom of God can be fully trusted. I will continue to love my friends who have bought into the worldly wisdom – that surely God will not deny His children their happiness living as gay men and women. But until such time I find that to be the message from God’s word, I will remain convinced that true Christians cannot continue to live gay lives indefinitely.

The arguments I have heard and seen in print all contain bits and pieces of worldly wisdom. It is all wisdom that conforms to “the standards of this age,” as mentioned in this passage from Corinthians. The wisdom of this age contains statements like these:

1.       I’ve seen and talked with Christian same-sex couples, and their sincerity cannot be questioned. They are real, true, believers – zealous for God.
2.       God would never say that a man or woman would have to live all their lives longing for a sexual partner.
3.       Your message to gays is a one full of hatred, not love.
4.       God’s word has been misinterpreted.
5.       We live in a different world and society than the one which existed when scripture was written.
6.       Men and women are ‘born that way.’ That makes it okay in God’s sight.

All of these arguments come from the wisdom of man, or from this world. I know some really great men, compassionate, loving individuals, who have bought into this way of thinking. It is simply misguided compassion. There is absolutely no way that man’s wisdom can ever trump Godly wisdom – that which comes from His word. The bible is full of warnings against trusting one’s own logic or the logic/wisdom of others. Here are a few others:

1Co 2:6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.

The wisdom of this age, and its rulers, will come to nothing in the end. It is worthless and leads men astray.

Pr 21:30 There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD.

Plain and simple, man’s ways of thinking will never override God’s ways. Also plain and simple, His word consistently states that homosexual actions are contrary to His wisdom.

Prayer: Father, our prayer today is that You not allow any of us to become vulnerable to worldly wisdom. Keep us firmly focused on Your word, heeding every instruction and gaining all our wisdom from it.
