The Ones Which Will Last

The Ones Which Will Last

Read Acts Chapter 4

Ac 4:11 He is “ ‘the Stone you builders rejected, which has become the Capstone.’ 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”

Imagine for a moment that you are a builder of houses and that you have decided to build one for yourself and your family. You have built many of them – so many that you are fully aware of what materials are good and which are sub-par. Therefore, you are going to select the very, very best materials for your own abode. You assemble all of the best building materials and are ready to begin. Just as you are about to start, a good friend calls you and states that he has come across a new, ultimate foundation material which has only recently been discovered. It has been tested and found to be flawless in every way.

Believing that you have enough experience to know that the foundation you planned is as good as any other, you proceed to build your house without testing the newer product. A wise builder would realize that there is always a possibility that a new and improved material could be discovered at any time. An unwise builder believes he knows it all and there is nothing that anyone can teach him about the construction business.

This is similar to what happens in the spiritual world. If a person thinks he has all the answers to life and spiritual things, he is not likely to consider any different philosophy or theology. The Jews were in that same position. They believed they had it all together. After all, they believed the scriptures, and they had many learned biblical scholars who had studied the books of the bible (which we know as the Old Testament). Those scholars had carefully searched the scriptures and had interpreted them for the masses. All was okay.

But all was not okay. Their studies of scripture were flawed. There were many references to the coming of Christ in those scriptures, yet their scholars failed to see and understand them. When the perfect building material was presented before them, it was rejected. The evidence of His deity, that He was the Messiah, was fully provable in the very biblical texts that were available to them. Their theology could have been easily corrected if only they had carefully and thoroughly examined the evidence before them.

The truth today is everywhere. The proliferation of bibles throughout the world is the best ever in human history. The truth about Jesus is available to a large portion of the world, yet He is rejected more often than accepted. There are many reasons for that and we could never name them all. We will only look at a few.

  1. Many men and women do not take advantage of the availability of God’s word. How many bibles lie on our shelves, never opened, never read, and never truly studied?
  2. Other men and women have read just enough to decide they don’t like what God says.
  3. Some have become so entrenched in other religions, false beliefs, that they are not open to hearing any other word.
  4. And then, there are those who do not believe there is a god or a God.

Our main point thus far is that there is no excuse for failure to believe in Christ and follow Him in obedience. But the application to our lives will be a little different. How easy is it for us to discover what God says about homosexuality and its related behaviors? The truth about this issue is in every bible that sits on any shelf or any coffee table. The only exception is the recently printed bibles which have been wiped clean of any reference to the subject. There is no excuse for any man or woman to believe that homosexual behaviors are permissible in God’s sight.

For you and me, there is only one cornerstone, and that is Jesus Christ. All that is built upon the Cornerstone must be the best materials that are available to us. All that we build on our foundation must be building blocks found in God’s word. One of those building blocks is the truth about homosexuality. If we build our house with a flawed block where that one should be placed, we will have a flawed home. Our house will be one which will bring us much unnecessary pain and suffering. We have chosen correctly. We are building our home with the right materials. Our enemy tries very hard to punch a hole in our wall, but he will not succeed if we stay the course and keep our block firmly in place. Let’s do it.

Prayer: Lord, we sometimes grow weary that we keep having to repair that part of our home. But we know that it is the right building block for us, and we must not replace it with an inferior stone. Keep us strong and determined to use only the building materials which You have supplied us. Thank You for revealing to us which materials are the best.
