Time And Time Again!
Read Psalm 107
Ps 107:1 Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever.
I hope you can tolerate another lesson devoted to thanksgiving. Maybe it will contain enough new ideas that it will speak to you. It spoke to me, because my life hasn’t always been dedicated to real thanksgiving and praise to our Savior. This chapter from the book of Psalm is full of reasons for us to be thankful. It contains many examples of God’s deliverance, and points out why those who belong to the Lord need to be thankful.
Ps 107:4 Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. 5 They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. 6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.
Ps 107:10 Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering in iron chains, 11for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.
Ps 107:13 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
These are but two examples in this chapter. Now let me tell you of one from my own life and experience. Any of you who have seen my testimony know that I lived seven of the early years of my life in total rebellion against God’s word in regard to homosexuality. After those seven years of despair and disappointment, I cried out to the Lord, asking Him to help me overcome my addiction to same-sex actions. He answered that prayer, and for thirty-five years I refrained from acting out. My gratefulness during that time was lacking. All during that time, I spent time wishing and longing that there were some way I could have a few moments of return to that life; not enough to get me back into it full time, but just enough to have an occasional good time. There is no way to properly express how foolish I was!!
When a man has been rescued from spiritual death, you would think that he would have no desire to return to the very thing which brought about his need for rescue. We are such fools sometimes! But the main point is, should we not be eternally grateful to the One who rescued us? Of course we should! Well, my thanksgiving was sorely lacking. After thirty-five years of resisting such things, I acted out once again. After a terrible time of repenting and dealing with my failure towards God, I renewed my resolve to resist all temptation. You can imagine what happened again, after a period of time.
This last excursion into that world, hopefully, will be my last. The Holy Spirit tore me up like never before. It was worse than any other time He has dealt with me. I thought I would never get back on track and have peace with God and myself again. However, once again, I cried out to God for deliverance and help getting beyond the consequences of my actions. And once again, He delivered.
The message from Psalm 107 is a thorough lesson for us. Each time the Lord delivers us from calamity, whether it is from same-sex attractions or any one of a number of other woeful circumstances, our proper response is to be eternally grateful. Sooner or later, each one of us needs to get it right. Gee, guys and gals, let’s make that time right now. Here is one other passage from this chapter.
Ps 107:17 Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. 18 They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death. 19 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress. 20 He sent forth His word and healed them; He rescued them from the grave. 21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for men. 22 Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of His works with songs of joy.
Prayer: Father, we do thank You for rescuing us from inescapable death. O Lord, forgive us of all the times when we have forgotten Your salvation, and once again returned to the very problem which enslaved us. How have You put up with us for so long? Thank You!!
