We Have, And Will Get More
Read Luke Chapter 8
Lk 8:16 “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him.”
Frankly, I must admit that I don’t understand the connection between verse 18 and the two preceding verses. Yet, verse 18 begins with, “therefore.” So there must be a connection. That said, I am going to go out on a limb today and put some ideas out for our consideration. Verse 18 tells us that we must consider carefully how we listen. The meaning of verse 16 seems fairly clear. If a man has a good handle on God’s truth, he has an obligation to let that truth (light) shine brightly, so that all those who know him can see that truth clearly. We must not misuse any opportunity that comes our way to spread God’s word.
Verse 17 isn’t quite as easy to explain. One possibility is that this is a warning to us, reminding us that the secrets of our hearts will someday be revealed. If we are true Christians, that fact will be made very clear. If we are fake believers, that too will be quite obvious at some time in the future. I surely hope that doesn’t mean that all my past sins will someday be known by everyone.
No matter what these two verses tell us, there is a connection to verse 18. The rest of this discussion can be classified as my opinion only, and you can draw your own conclusions as the Spirit speaks to your heart.
Mankind must listen carefully to what he hears and learns about God, Christ, and their words. The only way to eternal life is to believe in God and His Son, and to submit oneself to them. Submission includes listening to God’s word with a sincere intention of obeying it. If a person hears truth, believes it and heeds it, God’s Spirit will reveal even more truth. The more he hears and believes, the more will be revealed to him through the Spirit.
The opposite is also true. If a man hears truth, but fails to believe and heed it, that truth will be taken from him. That person will receive no more revelation from God. He can read and study all he wishes, but what he learns will be of no value to him.
How does this have any application to our SSA issue? Very much, I believe. Because you and I have believed what God has to say about homosexuality, and are living our lives in a fervent battle against it, God will reward us with greater and greater truths. He will give us all the truth that we need to continue living for Him. He will supply us with all we need to win this war with same-sex attractions. We can be very sure that our Lord is pleased with our willingness to cling to His word. The Spirit will continue to teach us, guide us, and lead us all the way to the finish line, ending in eternal life.
We can surely see how the opposite of that is happening. Those who have refused to believe God’s word on homosexuality have had their learning and spiritual growth cut short. They have short-circuited their connection with God and Christ. They have no hope as long as they cling to their false doctrine on the issue of homosexuality. The truth that was once revealed to them has been taken away.
If my thinking is correct, and I believe it is, we will know it. God will continue to enlighten us, strengthen us, and assure us of the victory which we seek. We have not rejected His word. We will continue to receive more.
Prayer: Father, if these ideas are not right, please correct me. Do not allow anyone to believe anything here which is not true. But no matter what, we do cling to Your warnings against willful homosexual activities. We believe You, and we intend to continue to believe as long as we live on this earth. We know enough about Your word and Your promises that we know, for definite surety, that You reward all who seek You. And that we do. Thank You for those great promises.
