Yes, Virginia, Zombies Are Real
Read 1 Timothy Chapter 5
1Ti 5:5 The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help. 6 But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.
Every day, I become sadder over the condition of our world. Are you a people watcher? Most of us are. I am at McDonald’s almost every morning, drinking coffee, reading the paper, and studying the bible. I also watch people during that time. It doesn’t take long to see someone who is obviously “dead while they live.” Our world is rife with those who are living their lives in futility, wasting their time with activities which lead to nowhere. How terrible it will be at the end of time, when they discover that everything they have accomplished on earth had no lasting value.
What can be done to show men and women the truth; that only a life lived for God has any meaning and purpose? There is little we can do, but we must do that little bit at every opportunity. We cannot open the eyes of everyone who is living an openly gay life. But we can present the truth to a few. The sad fact is that only a small number of those we encounter will be open to receiving the truth. Nevertheless, we must do what we can do.
What I have discovered over the course of my mentoring is that only the Holy Spirit can reveal truth to a man or woman in a meaningful way. No amount of our loving them, pleading with them to seek God’s pathway, will open their minds to believing and adhering to the truth. That fact is difficult to take, because we want everyone to know and accept the truth. It just isn’t going to happen.
1Jn 4:4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the One who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.
There is one other thing we can do for those who have rejected God’s message. We can pray for them and we must do so. I am sure that most of the early Christians considered Saul a lost cause. Yet, God interrupted his life on the road to Damascus. Maybe, just maybe, God has a plan to do the same for our friends who are living in open rebellion against God’s word. It is that small ray of hope which can prevent us from losing our minds over the sadness we experience as we live in a world of “zombies.”
We cannot close this train of thought without thinking about our great fortune. No matter how difficult is the road that we travel with Christ, it is better to be traveling that road, beaten and battered, than to be walking on the enemy’s highway to destruction. The modern day zombie doesn’t have any purpose in life. He has no idea where he is headed and why he is headed there. We are indeed the most fortunate of all SSA men and women. We know the truth, have accepted it, and consequently have an eternal future life with our Lord. And by the way, let us not return to the land of the zombies!
Prayer: Lord, first we thank You for revealing truth to us through Your Holy Spirit. Next, we pray for those we love who are living life without purpose and meaning. Send the Spirit into their hearts, and save them from death. Make them alive in You, as You have done for us.
